Ziggy was created by cartoonist Tom Wilson in 1971.  He has a sweet, easy going personality, portrayed as an animal lover, besides his dog Fuzz, he has a cat, fish, parrot, and even a pet rock.  The cartoon strip became very popular with the lovable loser, (things never went according to plan for poor Ziggy), eventually appearing in over 500 daily and Sunday newspapers. What followed was an extensive  licensed character merchandising campaign that included figurines, plaques, T-shirts, buttons, drinking glasses, lunch boxes, greeting cards, giftware, and much more.

Tom Wilson was was an American cartoonist but also a very talented painter.  His works have appeared in the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Society of Illustrators annual show in New York.  Tom's career started in 1950, and in 1955 he joined American Greetings as a designer, becoming Creative Director in 1957 and vice-president of creative development in 1978.  He is the creator of Ziggy, which he drew from 1971 to 1987.   In 1987, his son, Tom Wilson Jr. continued drawing Ziggy and has continued to produce the strip ever since.  Tom Wilson died on September 21, 2011 at the age of 80.
