- Details: This cut wood work on this fan is absolutely stunning! It is hand painted wood with a gorgeous "open-work" cut out design and fabric leaf with a painted gold border. The colors are vibrant purple, magenta and plum. This is a hand made fan by Folgado Romeu in Alaia Spain, and sold by El Corte Ingles in Madrid. Retains its original store sticker. Fans have been around since Roman times but these hand held - folding fans were introduced in the West during the 17th Century, and quickly became popular. These were not only great for keeping cool, they also kept bugs and unworthy suitors away. They became a fashion accessory, much like a brooch or bracelet, these were decorative pieces of art to be worn and shown.
