F. X. Smith’s Sons Co of McSherrystown PA was started in 1862 by Francis Xavier Smith in his basement in Irishtown. Eventually moving to McSherrystown and growing to six factories, employing five hundred workers rolling over six million cigars a year. For 156 years they manufactured their cigars in the USA. By the year 2000, they were the only cigar makers left in the area; due to stringent regulations, cigar makers were faced with either closing or moving outside the country, but FX Smith stayed. However, by 2018 they could no longer survive financially and moved the operations to the Dominican Republic.
