- Condition: Vintage - Used. Very Good Vintage Condition. RARE. This book is in absolutely wonderful condition for its age. It is a large print book, pages are 13 inches Long. There are 12 illustrations by Fern Bisel Peat, (1893-1971). Slight, very minor cover wear, which is rare for a softcover children's book, the inside is perfect. Pictures are the best way to access a book's condition. We never want to crease the books by fully opening them, this is why you'll notice our pictures are not always straight. Fern Bisel Peat was born in Erie, Pennsylvania. She graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University, with a degree in fine arts, the opened an interior decorating studio with her husband and designed fabrics and wallpapers for children. She illustrated over 60 books, including many for Samuel Lowe and Saalfield Publishing Company. In 1931, she illustrated an edition of Little Black Sambo for American Crayon Co. and Harter Publishing. From 1935 to the mid 1950's, Fern served as the art director for Children’s Playmate magazine, and illustrated all the magazine covers. In 1943, she illustrated this one, A Child's Garden of Verses, for Saalfield, which became one of her most popular books. You may be lucky to find some of her other work like: paper doll books, story illustrations, rag dolls, playing cards, etc. Fern Bisel Peat developed Alzheimer’s, and spent the last years of her life in Florida. She died in 1971 and is buried in Shauck Cemetery in Mansfield, OH.
