• Details:  This is such a pretty and romantic candle holder, which is also a vase all in one!  It is in the very popular, very much imitated, Moss Rose pattern.  Made of fine porcelain, it features one large pink rose alongside semi-opened rose buds.  The piece has a lovely intricate gold scalloped rim.  You will notice there's space between the candle cup and the outside, which can be filled with fresh (or faux) flowers for a gorgeous effect.  The underside logo, we were able to date to 1972, ("Chodziez Rok Zal 1852").  Makes a great hostess gift, maybe with a candle and pretty box of matches.  Nice romantic accent for your home, for Valentine's Day or Mother's Day too.

The Moss Rose pattern was named for an heirloom variety of rose, which became popular in the Victorian era.  Moss Rose was first introduced as a dinnerware/china pattern in the early 1800’s.   Believed to have originated in England the pattern became very popular, and because of its popularity, the pattern has been produced/copied by several companies (some listed above in the "Details").   Some of the most productive manufacturers were in England, France and Japan.  The popularity of this pattern declined in the early 1900’s but became popular again in post-war Japan as a popular American import up to the 1960’s.

Chodziez has a very long history with many so many turn-overs, splits and re-starts that it was hard to follow the history.  Here is what we gathered. The Chodziez porcelain factory was founded in 1896 by Hermann Hein, who happened to be a former owner of the original Chodziez factory that made faience (tin-glazed earthenware) starting in 1852 but that factory went bankrupt.  Hermann ran the company until 1888 under the name, H.M. & Co., Schloß Chodziesen.  Annaburger Steingutfabrik AG Annaburg, Abt. Kolmar continued production until 1921 when Polish goldsmith Stanisław Mańczak bought it. Then in 1926 the Porcelain Factory in Ćmielów became the new owner of Chodzież' factory and joined the two companies into one.  In the second half of 1930's the factory was owned by Czesław Szrama and Wincenty Kapczyński.  After WWII, under German state ownership, the Germans unified the two factories, porcelain and faience facilities. In the period between 1945 and 1950, Polish authorities named it "Porcelit, Fabryka Porcelitu".   But again, the two factories were separated in 1950.  In 1973 it was incorporated with other Polish ceramic producers into a newly created corporation.  In 1992 Porcelana 'CHODZIEŻ' S.A. was created as property of The State Treasury.  In 1998 the shares of the Company were bought by the VII NFI 'Kazimierz Wielki'.  Then in the year 2000 the factories were split again and Porcelana CHODZIEŻ S.A. has been part of the group of factories owned by Mr. Marian Kwiecień ever since.
