  • Brand:  Vintage Sarah Coventry Pendant Necklace, Safari / Aztec Medallion Cabochon Pendant
  • Vintage: 1970's
  • Details:  A super nice necklace from a much loved brand, Sarah Coventry. This piece is from the late 70's, around 1978, and it clearly reflects the bohemian style that was "in" at the time, interestingly, it's made a full come back and now this look is right back in style.  The necklace features an antique gold-tone chain beautiful open work spacers and small cranberry color beads in rounded and elongated oval shapes.  The most striking part is the large medallion with a Lucite cranberry color cabochon in the center and a Safari and/or Aztec type design all around the large bead, this piece can be removed and the necklace used without the pendant.  The medallion is embossed "SarahCov." on the back, this mark was first used in 1953.

Sarah Coventry was started by Charles H. Stuart in 1949.  He named it after his  granddaughter Sarah, and the family hometown of Coventry, England.  They sold jewelry using at-home parties with independent sales representatives, (similar to Avon, Mary Kay and Tupperware).  They did not design their own jewelry but used other manufacturers to produce their jewelry.  Their heydays were during the 1950's - 1970's.  Their jewelry was given away as prizes on popular TV shows like:  The Price is Right, Hollywood Squares, they even had a Sarah Coventry-designed crown for Miss Universe, and the company’s jewelry sets were awarded to Miss America pageant participants.   However, by 1981 the company was facing bankruptcy and was sold to a Chicago firm in 1984.  Sarah Coventry jewelry took back production in 2003, creating modern versions of their vintage designs. Unfortunately, most of the vintage pieces were made of higher quality than the modern copies, they ultimately closed in 2008.  Sarah Coventry became a household word by selling beautiful, inexpensive, costume jewelry direct to the consumer and remained in fashion for more than 60 years. Today they are recognized as the oldest direct selling jewelry company in the world.
