Snoopy is Charlie Brown's dog, a beagle, in the comic strip "Peanuts" by Charles M. Schulz.  He made his debut on October 4, 1950 and since then Snoopy has become one of the most recognizable and iconic characters in the comic strip and is considered more famous than Charlie Brown in other countries.  He is a good-natured beagle who is prone to imagining fantasy lives, including being an author, a college student known as "Joe Cool", an attorney, and a British World War I "flying ace".  The original drawings of Snoopy were inspired by Spike, one of Schulz's childhood dogs.

Charles Monroe Schulz was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 26, 1922.  He was the son of immigrants from Germany (father) and a Norwegian (mother) and became an American cartoonist and creator of the comic strip "Peanuts" (which featured the characters Charlie Brown and Snoopy, among others).  Peanuts made its first appearance on October 2, 1950, in seven newspapers.  After a slow start, Peanuts eventually became one of the most popular comic strips of all time, being published daily in 2,600 papers in 75 countries, in 21 languages.  Charles Schulz is widely regarded as one of the most influential cartoonists of all time.  Among his many awards he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on June 28, 1996.  Charles died in Santa Rosa, California on February 12, 2000.  As part of his contract with the syndicate, Schulz requested that no other artist be allowed to draw Peanuts. United Features had legal ownership of the strip, but honored his wishes.  Shortly after, on June 7, 2001, Schulz's widow Jean accepted the Congressional Gold Medal award on behalf of her late husband.
