- Pattern: Vintage Collectible State Plate, North Carolina, The Tar Heel State
- Made in USA
- Vintage: 1950's
- Details: This is a beautiful plate, and part of a very large Souvenir State Plate Collection made in the 1950's by Homer Laughlin, Vernon Kilns, Salem China Co and others. This plate is unmarked but after reviewing plate designs from several manufacturers, we are thinking this is most likely an unmarked Homer Laughlin plate. The plate has a beautiful aqua/blue border with gold floral filigree. It has the name "North Carolina" written in an old fashioned cursive font and underneath "The Tar Heel State" . The Tar Heel term started early in the 1800's when the state was a leading producer of supplies for the navy. Workers who produced tar worked barefoot during hot summer months and the term was associated with low class workers. However, during the Civil War, North Carolina soldiers flipped the meaning of "tar heels” which became an expression of state pride. The center of the plate shows several points of interest in North Carolina. This is a great addition to a state plate collection. Great gift for someone moving to the state of North Carolina, or a birthday gift for someone born in that state. Or collect them for yourself for states you've visited or lived in. We also carry: Nevada, New Mexico, Maine, Oregon and Virginia
