- Details: Extremely Rare Find! This vintage Imperial 400 Motel ashtray has the Thrifty Scotsman Logo, very hard to find. Started in 1959 by Bernard Whitney in Los Angeles, California, the San Diego motel location was one of the initial 4 built. Unfortunately Bernard expanded too quickly and by 1965 they had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Known for their trademark "butterfly roofs", many of those wonderful old buildings are still found, unchanged, under different names. We found some in cities like: San Diego, CA, Winslow, AZ, Willcox, AZ, Modesto, CA, Rockford, MO and many others. Based on the phone number shown on this ashtray (Two letters for the exchange name plus five digits used from 1931-1962), we believe it was made between 1959 and 1962. This is a wonderful piece of hotel and tourism industry memorabilia and history and a great collector's item in pristine condition.
