  • Pattern:  Decorative Dinner Plate, Slice of Life 1959 Cadillac Coupe DeVille, Industrial Style Illustration
  • Made in:  Indonesia
  • Not Vintage: 2002
  • Details:  This is actually part of a dinnerware set by 222 Fifth, (PTS International), from their "Slice of Life" collection, however, we think it also makes a wonderful decorative wall plate.  It is an illustration by Marla Shega of a 1959 Cadillac, a huge automobile that was very desired by all cool people & elites in the 1950's and early 60's, the era of the "tail fins".  The plate is stamped in the back and it also reads:  "Love it or hate it, this is the original All American Land Yacht, the GRANDE DAME of automobile design excess.  But one must admit, it would be great to have one in which to cruise down main street on a Saturday night, especially in this, "The Convertible Coupe DeVille".  The plate features a very large border with the Cadillac logo all around.  It is all done in a very industrial style, looks like a charcoal drawing, enhanced to show detail.  The plate is large at 11 inches in diameter, it is dishwasher and microwave safe.  This piece would make a wonderful gift for a car collector, someone born in 1959, or for a lover of all things Mid Century Modern.  Great decor for a man-cave, or a teenager's room, a study decorated with a 50's theme or car theme.  If you're collecting the Slice of Life dishes, we hope this piece brings you closer to completing it.

The automobile 'tailfin era' styling encompassed the 1950's and 1960's, peaking between 1955 and 1961. It was a style that spread worldwide, as car designers picked up styling trends from the US automobile industry, where it was regarded as the "golden age" of American auto design.  They first became popular in 1948 with each design getting bigger and bigger tailfins on every new model.  The most extreme tailfins appeared in the late 1950s, with the 1959 Cadillac Eldorado and the 1959 Chevrolet Impala. The 1959 Cadillac fins on this plate reminded people of jet airplane vertical stabilizers with sharp points and twin bullet-shaped taillights.

Marla Shega was born in Pennsylvania and attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.  After graduation she studied art in Florence, Rome, Paris and London.   Back in the states she settled in Chicago and began working as a freelance illustrator for advertising agencies across the country.  She worked for newspaper and magazine advertisements, book illustrations, billboards and package illustration just to name a few.  Some of her clients include:  McDonald's, Burger King, AT&T, Pillsbury and Coca Cola as well as many other well known corporations.
